For the record:
The origin of the word Spa comes from the abbreviation of the Latin formula Sanitas Per Aquam, which means health through water. The ancient Greeks believed in a therapy based on hot mineral water baths. Hippocrates (460-370 BC) already stated that baths were beneficial for internal balance.
At that time, Roman houses were built around a spa. This practice is therefore ancestral. In the Roman Empire, spas, baths and hammams were managed by the state. A distinction was made between house baths (balnea), private baths (balnea privata) and public baths (publica).
In the 8th century, the bathing culture was introduced in Japan and the first onsen (hot spring) was opened. There followed an evolution towards outdoor pools and spas integrated into Zen gardens.

In Finland, wherever there are hot springs, baths have developed (it was Finland that launched the practice of sauna followed by immersion in icy cold water or snow). Sauna is the only Finnish word that has been adopted internationally. According to statistics, the Finns are the happiest people in the world…. could it be because of the widespread practice of saunas there? In any case, Scandinavian expertise has been exported everywhere and hotels, spas and thalassotherapy centres now offer quality equipment to their clients.
So to have a lot of energy and be happy like the Finns, do yourself a favour and book a sauna session during your stay in Belle Isle!
